Parent Workshops


All families are welcome to attend and participate in these workshops, whether or not they have a child enrolled at an ECLC school. Our workshops are offered at two locations:

Chatham Workshops

  • Date: Tuesday, Oct. 22
  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Topic: What Happens after ECLC?
    • Learn about the transition from school to adulthood with CPS (Community Personnel Services) Director Mary Griggs. This is open to parents whose students are of any age.
  • Date: Tuesday, Nov. 19
  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Topic: Behavioral Strategies
    • Our BCBAs, Gabe DeLisa and Alex Agis, will offer an overview of strategies used to promote success, minimize challenging behaviors and maintain appropriate/safe behaviors that parents can use at home.
  • Date: Wednesday, Jan. 15
  • Location: Zoom
  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Topic: Guardianship 101
    • Attorneys from Hinkle, Prior and Fischer will describe how a guardianship order allows an individual to make decisions for another and what are the ensuing responsibilities. Learn the legal procedure to obtain guardianship and discuss the paperwork and backing evidence that is required.
  • Date: Wednesday, Feb. 12
  • Location: Zoom
  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Topic: Caring for the Caregivers
    • Join us for a workshop designed to address the unique needs of caregivers and explore the barriers that prevent us from prioritizing self-care or seeking help. Michael Cocuzza, Clinical Director of WayFare Counseling, LLC, will provide practical strategies to overcome feelings of guilt associated with taking time for yourself—ultimately enhancing your well-being and that of your loved ones. We will cover key topics impacting mental health and discuss how counseling interventions can be integrated into daily life to support self-care.
  • Date: Tuesday, March 4
  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Topic: OT Terms & Strategies
    • Learn the ABC’s and acronyms of Occupational Therapy from our own OT’s: Beth Favata and Kathleen Brandt. They will discuss how terms may be used in an Individualized Education Program (IEP); and explain sensory terms and techniques and the most commonly-used sensory strategies with students at ECLC.
  • Date: Tuesday, April 15
  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Topic: “Everyday Strategies to Enhance Communication for All Learners”
    • ECLC Speech therapist Laura Koch will offer an overview of three evidenced-based strategies and how to incorporate these into daily routines to optimize learning within natural and authentic contexts. These strategies include literacy, milieu approach, and adjusting language input.  After the discussion, parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to participate in a forum to exchange communication strategies that have worked effectively for their families.

Ho-Ho-Kus Workshops

  • Date: Tuesday, Oct. 23
  • Time: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Topic: The Post-Graduation Path
    • Mary Griggs, the director of ECLC’s Community Personnel Services, and job coach JanineBrown, will explore the path to success for students after graduation. Topics include an introduction to Perform Care; Access Link; Medicaid; guardianship; and Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) applications. The workshop ends with discussing how to create post-graduation plans that are tailored to each student, including person-centered planning, support coordination, DDD-funded services, tiers, and budget considerations.

  • Date: Wednesday, Nov. 20
  • Time: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Topic: Puberty & Sexuality
    • Explore valuable insights into your child’s developmental milestones and provide practical guidance on how to best support them during this critical phase of growth from childhood to young adulthood. Presenter Melissa Keyes DiGioia, the co-founder and Director of Education at Finding Your Individuality, will discuss key strategies for fostering emotional well-being, effective communication, and a positive environment for growth and success.

  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Location: Zoom
  • Topic: Guardianship Overview
    • This important presentation led by an attorney from Hinkle, Prior and Fischer, P.C., describes how a guardianship order allows an individual to make decisions for another, typically a parent for an adult child with special needs. Learn the legal procedure to obtain guardianship and discuss the paperwork and backing evidence that is required. In addition, gain an understanding of the extent of the powers you may seek from the court.

  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Location: Zoom
  • Topic: Caregivers & Self-Care
    • The Clinical Director of WayFare Counseling, LLC, will address the self-care needs of caregivers and explore the barriers that prevent them from prioritizing self-care or seeking help. Gain practical strategies to overcome feelings of guilt associated with taking time for oneself. Key topics include mental health and seeking counseling for daily life support.

  • Date: Wednesday, May 21
  • Time: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Topic: Behavior Workshop
    • Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) Matthew Kuzdral and Sonni Kim will highlight common behavioral challenges faced by parents and offer approaches to reinforce more socially appropriate behaviors in home and community settings. They will discuss practical strategies and cover transitions, self-care skills, chores, visual supports, and planning for outings.
