At ECLC of New Jersey, we prepare our students and adult clients to defy the odds! Nationally, only one in four adults with special needs is participating in the workforce. We do everything possible to ensure that all our students are prepared for work options, as appropriate.
Our upper school students prepare for post-graduation options by job “sampling.” Chatham school student Casey is learning job skills at Professional Hair Salon & Spa in Livingston and other businesses. She has been an ECLC student since age 6 and graduates this June. Casey travels with other students via a special ECLC bus to the business locations. At the hair salon, for example, she sweeps, does laundry and sorts towels. She is learning practical work skills, plus becoming comfortable with other employees in a real work setting. This experience even gives her a taste for what commuting might entail using state-sponsored Access Link services for people with disabilities
Ho-Ho-Kus student Jada is also working several job “sampling” positions, learning new skills. At Chocolate Etc. in Wyckoff, she packages chocolates for order fulfillment every Friday morning, carefully placing treats into plastic bags and finishing with a twist tie. The business owner says it’s a critical position at the busy shop, and she appreciates Jada’s work skills and sweet personality.
Jada also “works” at two senior centers near the school. There, she hands out information to the residents; sets tables for lunch and helps clean up afterward. Her outgoing personality shines through when interacting with the seniors who love to engage with a young person.
Both students are graduating in June and these experiences are critical to helping round out their education in the classroom. They will graduate with a clear plan for their next steps into adulthood.
